How Traveling Changed My Relationship With My Mom

You read my stories when they were bound with string—and you read the ones I get nervous about now before I submit them to my editors. You told me New York wasn’t too big—and neither was the world. You pushed me to keep going when I thought I couldn’t—and to believe in impossible-seeming things, when I thought I shouldn’t. You encouraged me to fly and try it all—and have always been there if I crashed or needed to land. Or, well, to soar with me.

If this year has taught us anything—through scattered chats and time zones, big, big changes and across-the-world distance—it’s that all of those things don’t matter. We find a way to talk, to laugh, to catch up and adventure. Even, all the way to Peru.

Much like I reminded you scaling those 2,500 steps, you always nudge me to never give up—whether it’s love, myself, my career or all three—and that’s why this byline, on Mother’s Day, is so special. My first big first-person one for Travel + Leisure … and I’m so glad it’s about you.

You’re the white wine to my red, the pisco to my sour, the Sag to my Virgo, my favorite person and travel buddy—and the best friend I’ve ever had. I love you Mama. From Colombia and around the world, times infinity. This one is for you.
